This kit was originally released in 1964, when America was involved in the Space Race against the Soviet Union. The review sample is the 1996 reissue of the classic kit. The kit is discontinued, but examples do show up from time to time on eBay.

The kit features both the Mercury and Gemini capsules in 1:48 scale. The parts are molded in light gray styrene, and appear to be free from flash. Some minor cleanup will be required following dry-fitting of the parts. A sheet of clear acetate is also included for use as windows for the capsules.

The Mercury capsule has 40 parts, and the Gemini capsule has 68 (or 80, if the builder decides to build the capsule with the tricycle ski landing gear that was developed but never used).

A simple decal sheet with minimal markings is part of the kit (and minimal means minimal). The Gemini capsule only has two markings (the US flag and the wording “United States”), while the Mercury capsule has the national markings along with the builder’s choice of six different names (Freedom 7, Friendship 7, Sigma 7, Faith 7, Aurora 7, and Liberty Bell 7).

The Mercury capsule has a removable side panel, and the Gemini capsule’s dual-hinged front doors open to reveal the crew positions. Astronaut figures are included as well.
