Manufacturer:Revell
Medium: Styrene
Parts: 21
Status: Available
Release Date: 2008
Skill Level: Beginner
This is one of four SnapTite kits that Revell issued in boxes that measured 5.5 inches x 6.5 inches. As such, the scales of the kits are all over the place. This one is pretty close to 1:72 scale. In addition to this kit, Revell also released Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter, ARC-170, Luke’s X-Wing, Vader’s TIE X-1, and a TIE Interceptor.

The kit is very simple and only has 21 parts. The pieces are pre-painted.

It’s a nice, small kit of the Jedi starfighter and makes a decent addition to a model collection. The completed kit is 3.9 inches long and 3.4 inches wide.

UPDATE: I finally had a chance to snap one of these kits together, and can offer some build-up comments now. I received both the Anakin and the Obi-Wan Jedi Starfighters as a Christmas 2011 gift from my Starship Modeler Secret Santa.

The parts are pre-painted, and came on four sprues of colored parts and one clear sprue. The instructions take all of four steps to complete the model.

Even though this is a snap-together kit, the builder might want to use some model cement to make sure the parts stay put. I didn’t use as much as I should have, and there are some fit issues.

Assembly starts with the cockpit, and it’s pretty simple. Be sure to take care mounting the seat (part 11) to the cockpit floor (part 9). If you’re not careful, you can easily snap off the headrest. Also, you might want to put a dab of glue on the mounting tab because there isn’t much to hold the seat to the cockpit floor. There isn’t an opening canopy as in the larger version. The canopy glass is sandwiched between the fuselage halves (parts 5 and 6). The front canopy framing is a good candidate for model cement, and it’s the first place that I used some. The frames are held in place by two small mounting pins, but my upper pin kept separating. I ended up trimming it, then applying some glue and setting it aside to dry. Also, the front glass (part 10) required some glue to keep it in place.

The next areas with some fit issues are the wings (parts 1, 2, 3 and 4). The port side had more gaps in the port side than the starboard side, and it might be an issue with the internal mounting pins being too long for the corresponding holes. I’m planning on trimming down the mounting pins the next time I build one of these kits.

The final step has you attaching the wings to the fuselage, and then attaching the engines. I used model cement to make sure the wings stayed put because they were flexing quite a bit. The engines went right into place, although I needed to use a hobby knife to open the starboard holes a little bit to allow the mounting pins to fit. Also, the radiator panels are fixed in the open position, so you can’t change the configuration of the starfighter.

Overall it’s a nice little kit, and the figure of Obi-Wan looks a lot better than the rubberized blob that’s included with the larger-scale kit. It makes me wish that a molded figure had been part of Revell’s design for bigger kit.

This is a nice kit for a modeler who has worked on a few kits, and makes a good starting place to work on some smaller-scale kits. There are also weathering opportunities with the addition of pastels, and using dry-brushing to simulate wear.
