The AV-98 Ingram is a labor designed specifically for law enforcement by Shinohara Heavy Industries. It is featured in the 47-episode television series Mobile Police Patlabor that aired in 1989-1990. The Ingram's advanced design allows for more human-like movements. As a law enforcement labor, the Ingram is equipped with an anti-labor stun stick and a 37mm revolver cannon, but it can also carry a shotgun-like 90mm riot cannon. The Ingram also appeared in the 7-episode OVA series (1988-1989) and in the 1989 film “Patlabor the Movie”. It later appeared in the US-aired spinoff series Mobile Police Patlabor: The New Files (or P-Series), with 16 episodes between 1990 and 1992, in the Patlabor 2 movie in 1993,and in WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3 in 2002.

The kit was crisply molded in white styrene and included vinyl parts for the main body area and the arms and legs. Clear red parts were included for the shoulder lights, and a clear green faceplate was also included. Armament includes a shotgun, pistol, a riot shield, and a small baton.

While there was no problem with the styrene parts, the highly-flexible vinyl parts were a major pain in the backside. They are not rigid like vinyl figure kits, but are more like the rubberized plastic parts that have been included as figures in the Revell pre-painted Star Wars EasyKit product line. While paint will adhere to the parts, it won’t adhere without cracking. This becomes pretty much a non-issue because, despite having armature inside the arms and legs that allow the limbs to be positioned, the vinyl coverings don’t allow you to set the limbs in position before the vinyl pulls them back into their neutral position. A little flexibility is possible, but not a whole lot. Mostly rotation at the hips and shoulders, with little or none at the knees and elbows.

I painted the ‘Mech overall white and then detailed with black and dark gray. The decals went on over a coat of Future, and the panel details were hand-drawn using a Pigma Micron 05 pen.

The completed kit is 6.5 inches tall.

If you don’t mind having a model that basically stands at attention all the time, and you leave the vinyl unpainted, then this isn’t a bad kit. It is a good representation of an Ingram, and is worth having in your collection.
