The RGM-109 Heavygun is from the movie Mobile Suit Gundam F91 that was released in 1991. It is a smaller, next-generation mobile suit that is designed to be faster and more maneuverable. It is permanently armed with two head-mounted Vulcan cannon, two 4-slot hand grenade racks (on the hips), a shield, and two beam sabers. Optional hand-held weapon includes a beam rifle.

The parts were well-molded with no visible flash, and they went together without any problems. This was a very easy kit to build, and it was quite a bit of fun.

I decided to use this kit as fodder for a different paint scheme. Just about every ‘Mech in the Gundam universe has craploads of color that show up in a combat environment. It doesn’t make sense to have a ‘Mech painted white, red, blue and yellow when the environment is, for example, a forest. So, with that in mind, I decided to try out a camouflage scheme similar to the one used on NATO vehicles.

After priming the model, I applied a coat of Tamiya Khaki as a base coat. Then I got out my container of Silly Putty and started masking off areas for the application of the second color: Tamiya J. N. Green. Once it dried, I removed the Silly Putty, put it in different locations, and airbrushed on the third color: Model Master Faded Olive Drab. Again I waited for the paint to dry, then one more removal and reapplication for the final color: Tamiya Flat Black.

I used a small amount of Future to get areas ready for decal application, applied the decals, and after waiting 24 hours, dry-brushed with Model Master Chrome Silver. Testor’s DullCote sealed everything in.

This build-up was awarded a Merit at WonderFest 2008 under the heading “RGM-109 Full Combo”.

Here is a link to the article on the use of Silly Putty that I wrote for Starship Modeler.

The completed model stands about 6.5 inches tall.
