Let’s begin by saying what we all think when we first see the box that this kit comes in. It’s huge! The box measures 12 x 20 x 4.75 inches, and it’s packed full of parts. The model is almost 13 inches long when completed. To give the reader a reference point, the photo of the Service Module section was taken showing the two halves in comparison to a 26 ounce jar of spaghetti sauce.

The kit that is reviewed in this entry was issued as part of the Young Astronauts program, and included a poster and a membership application. Other versions of this same kit have been issued over the years under different product lines, but the parts are the same.

According to the information on the box, the Command Module itself is colored gold chrome to simulate the gold-foil covering. While this is a nice touch, it’s going to prove difficult to color-match once the part is separated from the sprue. An alternative might be to purchase some Dupli-color Instant Gold Chrome spray paint from your local auto parts store, and use that to paint the entire gold shield.

The kit also features two clear-plastic sections to allow you to see inside the completed Command Module and Service Module sections. This is a rather nice touch, and the interiors can benefit from lots of scratchbuilt detail if the modeler should choose to add it.

Operating features include a separating Command Module and Service Module, a swiveling engine bell, a folding S-band high-gain antenna.

The model has 127 crisply-molded parts, primarily in white and gray styrene. Interior instrument details are provided as stickers, and exterior markings are done as waterslide decals. The decals are very basic. Replacement detail decals can be obtained from www.spacemodelsystems.com

www.spacemodelsystems.com (Set #AP32 - includes CM and SM markings, descriptive text and locator maps in booklet) owned by Rick Sternbach.

The interior detail is represented by a series of stickers and is rather disappointing because of the lack of detail. On the plus side, a resin drop-in replacement is available from www.realspacemodels.com, and retails for about $30.00. Also available from the same website are a resin hatch (6 parts) for $10.00 and a Block II Apollo 15 Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) for $40.00 (21 resin parts, 6 styrene, 2 PE brass, and 6 wire pieces).

The instruction sheet is your basic fold-out Monogram black/white/gray sheet, and has 35 steps.

If you are a fan of Real Space kits, this is definitely one to add to your collection. Experienced modelers can have a lot of fun adding in additional details.

Originally released in 1986 it was then reissued in the 1990’s and is now scheduled to be reissued again in 2009.
