When Disney’s “The Black Hole” was released in 1979, viewers were treated to a huge number of visual effects, as well as new designs. Unfortunately, the plot of the movie left a few things to be desired, and it’s pretty much considered a “bomb” in movie history.

Three models from the movie were released: the USS Cygnus (see the kit review here on the website), V.I.N.C.E.N.T. (also reviewed here on the website), and finally Maximillian. Maximillian was the homicidal mechanical henchman of the commanding officer of the USS Cygnus, Dr. Hans Reinhardt (played by Maximillian Schell).

I had looked at auctions for Maximillian kits for years before I finally found one that seemed to be more affordable (read “under $100”). A quick check of eBay at the time of this review found three kits in their original boxes, with the lowest “Buy It Now” price being $129.95. The other two kits were priced around $150.00, which is why I jumped on this kit when I had the opportunity.

The kit is molded in dark red styrene that looks thick (to be expected of a kit from the late 1970’s). It is mostly free from flash and sink marks. A clear red lens is included for the “eye”, and a wire stand is included to make Maximillian “float” in mid-air. The kit includes multi-sectioned weapons modules with lasers, tools and cutters. The weapon arms rotate, bend and extend, and the head turns. The chest cavity appears to be large enough that a power pack could be placed inside, allowing the “eye” to be illuminated with an LED.

The completed model stands about 11 inches high on its stand.

If you can find one of these old kits, they’re kinda neat to have, from back when Star Wars was only two years old, and many production studios were trying to capitalize on its success to launch their own science fiction sagas.
