This kit is part of the product line that was released by MPC in 1978, along with the X-Wing and Millennium Falcon. The kit was reissued in 1989, 1995, 1996 (flight display). 1997 (Plus Pack), and 2005, all with different box art. The 1989 release was issued with the original 1978 box art and Star Wars logo (the one with Luke holding his lightsaber above his head while Leia is sitting at his feet).

The parts are molded in light gray styrene and clear styrene (hatch window, cockpit window, and stand). A figure of Darth Vader is included, but it is kind of “blobby” and formless, so the builder will need to do some work to make it look better. The parts are pretty-well molded and have recessed panel lines, which is something that wasn’t always included in MPC/AMT/Ertl kits at the time. This is one of the more-detailed kits that they issued.

I’ve read somewhere that parts of this kit were used to make the TIE Bomber filming model that is seen in “The Empire Strikes Back”, which was released in 1980.

The completed kit is 8 inches wide, 7 inches long, and 4.5 inches high.

The kit is scheduled for future reissue.
