This is a real space kit, and one that joins Aoshima’s growing line of space craft.

The Hayabusa is an asteroid probe that Japan’s Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science (ISAS) launched on May 9, 2003. While carrying out verification testing of its ion engines, the probe’s mission had it land on the asteroid Itokawa more than 300 million kilometers away from Earth, gather samples there, and then return to Earth in June 2010. The Hayabusa, with its grueling and difficult journey complete, will drop its probe capsule into the Australian desert before it reenters the atmosphere itself.

The kit parts are finely molded in crisp gray styrene that is free of flash, but some ejector marks are present, mostly on interior areas that will not be visible once the kit is built. The exceptions are a couple of spots on the undersides of the solar panel assemblies, and on one side of the stand. Although the detailing is raised, it is very fine, particularly on the solar panels and on the dish.

The completed kit looks to be about 5.5 inches long (length of the solar panels) and 8.5 inches wide (solar panel edge to interior of body and out to the edge of the opposite solar panel).

The kit is very well detailed. But has a low part count. Requiring a great deal of small detail masking. Part fit is solid. But the final model is fragile. The included base is only a few inches and is inadequate to hold the distributed weight. Plan on making your own base, or using an alternate. Over all finished appearance can be stunning with the right paint job and base.
