The Imperial All Terrain-Armored Transport (AT-AT) first appeared in the 1980 film Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. It returned in 1983’s Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. I know because I saw both movies in the theaters when I was a kid. The first sight of the Imperial “walkers” as they were called sent chills down my spine. Huge, hulking, mechanical walking machines with a withering array of weapons, they were (and are) one of my favorite vehicles.

F-Toys’ 1:144 kit (if you can call it that) is beautifully done. It is one of seven kits in F-Toys’ Set #6, including: X-Wing, AT-AT, Millennium Falcon, AT-TE, TIE Fighter, AT-ST, and the Imperial Star Destroyer. There was also an eighth “secret” item but I don’t know what that is.

The AT-AT comes partially assembled in light gray styrene, with a small amount of weathering present. The parts include: main body and head, four (4) legs and two (2) side-mounted cannons. The cannons are on a small sprue and will have to be carefully removed to prevent breakage.

The legs attach via special eight-sided tabs into the backs of the upper legs. There is really only one pose, with the two left legs going forward and the two right legs going backward. The head can be moved side-to-side (neck doesn’t move), and the side-mounted cannons can elevate and depress. The main guns under the chin are molded with the left gun having just fired and the right gun in the ready position.

This is a great little kit, and one that, with careful cutting, could be modified to model a downed walker on Hoth. And with the price, they’re cheap, fairly easy to come by, and can be placed in a decent-sized diorama.

The assembled AT-AT is 5 inches long and stands about 4.5 inches tall.
