This kit is one of four models released in late 2014, just after Bandai’s license for Star Wars became effective. The other three models are the 1:72 X-Wing and the 1:12 figures of Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper. These kits are designed as snap-fit, but can be glued for durability.

The Bandai TIE Fighter is molded in dark gray and black styrene that is crisp and free of flash. A sprue of clear green parts is provided for the main laser beams (action display). The kit includes two pilot figures, one standing and one seated.

Bandai’s engineering of this kit is kinda cool. The main cockpit “ball” where the pilot sits is built, and then is inserted into the front and back halves of the cockpit/arms assembly, keeping the interior from shifting following assembly. The solar panels are sandwiched between the inner and outer lattices, like a hub between two sets of wheel spokes. The edges of the panels (six each) are attached next, locking the spokes in place.

An action base (made up of a section that looks like the surface of the Death Star) is provided, and the stand is articulated to allow the TIE Fighter to be posed in any number of attitudes. The stand connects into the bottom of the “ball” of the TIE Fighter via a ball-and-socket connection. The access port can also be covered with a part that is provided, should the builder decide to not use the stand for display.

The model includes both stickers and waterslide decals for markings.

According to the dimensions I found on-line, the “real” TIE Fighter is supposed to be 6.3 meters long by 6.4 meters wide by 7.5 meters high, so it should work out to 3.44 inches long by 3.5 inches wide by 4.10 inches high in 1:72. Below is a dimension comparison of the Bandai kit and the Fine Molds 1:72 TIE Fighter.

At any rate, this is a great kit, and one that makes a nice addition to any Star Wars model display.
